1) Resignation - you are the one who initiated the separation from the company, it's like break up with a boy friend/girl friend, the one who calls quits look better. You are the one who made the decision that things are not working out for you and you want a change.
2) Termination - company is the one who initiated the separation from the company and they are the one who thinks things are not good.- most times due to performance issues of the employee.
3) Layoff - company is initiating the separation, but for business purposes, and it is usually not due to individual's performance, and affects many people.
So,of all 3, resignation looks the best for the employee. Layoff is also easy to explain, e.g., business direction change, company getting rid of who department, etc.. Termination takes more explanation.

The only thing is with resignation, you will not be able to get unemployment benefit. At least harder to get with out a challenge from the company.
