If you only worked there for 6 month, you can ask for 1 month of pay, saying that's the minimum time needed for you to look for other opportunities.
If you do not like their management style, and don't think they can give you a good reference, you do not have to use them. But since new employer might want to ask them, you probably should also ask current management that if you need reference from them, that they do not bad mouth you (they may feel guilty and agree to that), and only confirm with prospective employer that you worked there for this duration.
