I am no expert. Here is what I learned from some papers I read: Your % with your employer should be just enough to take advantage of your employer’s match-off. Stop there. If you want to invest more in your retirement, you can open your own IRAs ($4,000 per person in 2006). The reason that you should only put enough money in your employer’s 401k to get your employer’s match-off is employers’ 401 plans usually have limited investment options. Other reasons are diversity; don’t put all eggs in a single basket, etc. But if your employer’s plan is really great, you can put more money there.
