I beg to disagree here, Musician. Orange and apple,

we should be comparing Ballet with Broadway show. What is american art really? Most of it just adopted from European and African. Classic music has a huge audience in US, and so is Jazz. Going to concerts in New York for classic music, you can realize easily that people know music, and they know what to look for and what to enjoy. If you want to compare Ballet, please compare them with Ballet in US, instead of Broadway show. American Ballet Theatre is not Soviet quality, but it's definitely pretty good. In fact, even New York City Ballet is not shady at all.

US does attract gifted people in all areas, just count how many great artists from all over the world ended up in the States during 50's and 60's. There is really no need to trash art in America like that.
