"中国的同学所剩不多,都成了人上人" because the rest of the Chinese were poor, both socially and financially.

You feel sad because you are not "人上人" in an environment where others are also well off.

One thing you do not realize is those "人上人" feel really unsafe: Just look at their apartments (very few of them have houses although they are "人上人" ), they are like fortresses to keep themselves safe.
