Three people have been killed in a horrific head-on crash on Hwy 404 near Stouffville.
Two vehicles collided in the northbound lanes just north of Stouffville Rd just before 5 p.m. Thursday.
Police say that a Ford Fusion was heading southbound when it suddenly flew across the ditch that separates the two sides of the highway.
The Fusion slammed into a Toyota Camry head on.
The three occupants of the Camry were killed. The driver of the Fusion that crossed the ditch survived, an incredible outcome given the impact of the crash.
“It’s a massive collision, a high-energy impact,” says OPP Sgt Kerry Schmidt.
Schmidt described the aftermath as “horrific.”
The Fusion ended up resting on its side with the front end smashed in. The Camry was mangled with its top half torn off by firefighters who tried to get to the victims.
Police are now investigating what caused the driver who survived to cross the ditch into oncoming traffic.
“I have seen vehicles cross through these areas in the past,” Schmidt says. “And obviously when they go head-on to another vehicle, the results can be tragic.”
