Since you starter is cranking, I think your car starter is working fine. It seems that there is no fuel getting into the engine. I have no idea how long the gas tank is empty. In modern day car, the fuel pump is installed inside the fuel tank and is using the fuel to cool it off. If the fuel tank is empty and the fuel pump is do its work. It is possible to burn out the fuel pump because there is no way to precipitate the heat. I hope it is not this case, but it cannot be rule out. Any way, it is a symptom of not having fuel into the engine.
