4 wheel drive systems:
Have low range gears.

Mostly for "truck type" rear wheel drive vehicles with real off road capability.
Examples: Ford F150, or Mercedes Benz G55.
All wheel drive systems:
No low range gears
Can be full time, or part time.
Can have up to 3 (front center and rear) limited slip differentials.
Can be adapted to front, or rear wheel drive vehicles.
Found on “car type” vehicles, used mostly on paved roads.
The all wheel drive capability helps with inclement weather, and adds some light off road capability.
Examples: Subaru Impreza STI, and Audi A4 quattro.
