Auto Tranni drive skill

Question about driving auto-transmission. Can I swtich gear between N D 3 2 1 when the car is moving? I saw some guys change from D to N while the car is aproching a stop light and switch back to D from N when it came to a stop. I assume that could be a way for Auto-shift vehicle to save some gas. But some one told me it is unsafe to switch from D to N while you are driving and the auto-trans car is built to have the gear on ALL the time, Is this true? Is it ok to switch between N and D while the car is running on a high speed? I feel no difficult by swtiching frmo D to 3 and I guess it is ok to do so when you are driving on a up hill road, am i right?
