I have been an investor in both real estate and stock market for years. I have learned that I am not good at dealing with all the things around real estate investment in relation to stock market. There are just too much work in real estate investment which is hard to do when you have a job.
If you don't want the headache while managing your investment, I would suggest that you put the money in index funds. For example, S&P500 index fund. The S&P500 historically provides the average annual return of 10% since 1950s. Even better, there are funds called total stock market index fund that provides lower risk than S&P500 fund and have 3,000+ stocks in the fund compare to 500 stocks in S&P500. 'VTI' is one of these total stock market index funds. By investing in index funds, you don't really need to do much, just contribute regularly to the fund.
A person with 30 years average annual income of $100K. If you contribute 10% of your annual income to the index fund with 10% annual return, after 30 years, you should have over $1.5M.
