I think you hit the nail on the head: teaching kids to be discerning, to have critical thinking skills are the solutions to all this mess or some other issues they may encounter in the future.

BTW, the books I listed are majorly about the way politicians frame/choose their languages in their debates and communications. The first book is from conservative side (Frank Luntz), the second is from liberal side (George Lakoff). Both authors did have big influence over the past decade’s politics and elections. Gay marriage is just an example he used to illustrate his points about framing language to win supports.
