Talk to the agents who represent builders. They do sell the model houses before closing everything. They actually pay you the rent until all the houses are sold, which might be perfect for you if you would like to stay oversees for a while.

or you can pay for the upgrades to get the location that you like.

For your family, your time is probably worth more money dealing with VCs and start-ups than with a contractor. Just my 2 cents.
