question about 2007 to 2015 ...

In 2007 DOW already peaked at 14,500 and today it is 17,800. You said you didn't sell stocks during 2008 recession, and your portfolio grew from 1608 to 4105. It is 150% growth compared than 2007 while DOW only grow 40%. Is it mutual funds or individual stocks that grew so fast ?
