Not an expert, but this is what i did three years ago.

Take your RMB or Doller to local Bank of China, ask for a casher's check.  Then when ypou come back to US, just deposit the check to your US local bank.  Last time I brought back 30K US dollar.  

My money was in my sister's name in China, the check was made to me.  No issue with the bank and no tax either.

Not sure whether things have changed or not.
