Don't worry about these trivial things.  It happens all the time.  The problem is so many parents care about these kinds of things and they want these titles to boost their kids' resume for college application.  School also wants some balance by giving some infer students something to brag about.  But realistically, these things don't help much.  Say if you son is the best math students and win many trophies and most of them are first place, but math teacher wants to give math team president to somebody else.  Admission officer will review the prizes these two students awarded and instantly find out who is the best math student.  But if these two students apply to different colleges, the other kid will get a boost since s(he) doesn't have the best math student from the same high school to compare to.  But your son really doesn’t lose much since this kind of position is not particularly important and tournament record speaks itself.  I know teacher and schools that do this kind of things hurt kids a lot and is not a good practice.  Sometimes school wants to beautify the college enrollment record.
