I realized that a lot of people here don't manipulate light. My personal view is that real photographer has to master light also. Maybe you think they are expensive? Here is some gears can help you to start learning about light...
1. Any manual speedlight: one is ok for beginner. Two is sufficient to do any pro job. You can add more when you feel you need more.
Cheap and Good option: Vivtar 285 HV, about $ 40 - 50 in Ebay. This product is so classic and reliable, Vivtar stopped production. Very powerful full manual flash... Use it wisely, :-) Use this to balance sunset or direct sun, the result is wonderful. You can go to my Flickr to see some of the results.
2. 38" to 42" white shoot through umbrella: price $10 to $30 in Amazon, if you want to be mobile, get a folderable.
3. Wireless trigger: one transmitter and one receiver, about $30 in Ebay. Of course you can go with PC sync cable. But it's not cheaper than this option. I am using CACTUS due to their great price vs. performance and big family of product. It's a little more expensive. But if you stick to V2 version, it's affordable.
4. umbrella holder brachet, about $5 in ebay.
5. light stand, start with some cheap options or you can even use some stick if you have assitant. $ 11 from Amazon.
6. Other DIYs with 0 cost or less than $5. I will write another thread with photos for them.
