If you want to groom yourself for a big raise or promotion, self evaluation in annual review is usually too late and useless. Day to day work and communication with boss is more important.  Only a few people can become superstar overnight by just one project. If you have a good relationship and frequent communication with your boss, no one can steal credits from you and some bosses may even shift other people’s credits to you.
