Let's see, most people accumulate to less than 1 million by the time of trust setting up, which is not even enough for the rest of the surviving spouse's life. I don;t think it is necessary to get into this trouble. I'd rather live a peaceful life, saving the energy to explain to my spouse about the designing. 

The retirement accounts and life insurance all have a beneficiary design ( 1st and 2nd beneficiaries). The living trust is not necessary for these accounts.
