There is no cost in taking out a 401K loan. Whatever interest you pay on the loan goes to your own account. The main drawback is that you may miss the opportunity if there is a sharp upturn in the stock market. In additions, you have to pay back the entire loan immediately once you leave the company, which may become a problem to some people.
