In some places, the property tax is based on the value of the property on Jan. 1 of the current year. If a transaction takes place during the middle of the year, you pay the tax based on the old appraised value. But the county is supposed to adjust your tax using the new purchase price. A refund check will be sent to you within 12 months or sooner.
