I believe that is due to your AMT. You calculate the federal tax with the regular way, which takes last year's state tax you filed with your state return as a negative number on your schedule A. Since you hit the AMT, AMT number is higher because the state tax is taken off when calculating AMT. Playing around with Schedule A is only meaningful if you don't hit AMT.
