The German government signalled it might support joint a European-International Monetary Fund bailout of Greece, should the country need assistance.
Chancellor Angela Merkel is "open to a financial participation by the IMF" in any assistance for Greece, said a senior German official. The official stressed that Greece hasn't asked for a rescue. Germany wants Greece to solve its fiscal crisis alone through austerity measures.
The comments come as Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou said his country might turn to the IMF for aid if European leaders don't offer Greece more explicit guarantees of help at their summit next week.
