Complicated comparison

If the two sensors in question are from the the same time, then, the larger sensor will produce better image quality (in general).

In 5D and 7D comparison, the story is more complicated: 7D has a newer sensor, so in terms of high ISO noise, 7D is better (in 4 - 4.5 years, Canon made progress in making the 7D sensor).

But in terms of image sharpness, for most lenses, I would think 5D is still better.
