Use Mirror lock plus Self-Timer
Among the three factors: hand shaking, push of shutter button, and mirror flip vibration, the vibration of mirror flip causes the worst damage to a clear image. With a tripod, remote control, and live-view shooting, the mirror lock is effective and easy to use. When condition does not allow, a combination of mirror-lock and self-timer is the best solution without a tripod. However, in all Canon SLR models, including 5D Mark II and 7D, the shortest self-timer is set fixed to 2 seconds, which is too long for keeping the view and unbearably long in a fast shooting situation.
I would suggest Canon to offer an adjustable self-timer (in an update of firmware) to allow 0.5-second self-timer, or delay after the push of shutter button. Or the best – a special setting that combines mirror-lock with 0.4-0.5 second delay/self-timer, which is long enough for the mirror vibration to stop.
It is so simple and easy to implement and use. No remote controller, no tripod, no live-view, you just push the button once, wait for 0.5 second, the exposure is done without the annoying mirror vibration if light is not a problem.
By the way, you can clearly observe and feel the mirror vibration in live-view mode using a long focus lens.
