The lender will ask your status docs when they review your file. Unless you are citizen, the lender will ask the immigration docs like green card, h1b visa, etc.
If they know you are J1, they will let you know that you can use your own income to qualify. Sometimes, lender will make exceptions, though. I got one exception about two years back. But the guideline is tight now.
