Red Cross Seeks Funds To Aid Disaster Victims

Jennifer Peryam
Times-Union Staff Writer

Kosciusko County Chapter of the American Red Cross is seeking funds to assist the victims in Monday's earthquake in China and the May 2 cyclone in Myanmar.

The earthquake in China, measuring 7.9 on the Richter Scale, caused deaths and injuries, destroyed towns and roads, cut off electricity, communication, transportation and water supply.

On May 2, high winds, heavy rains and flood water claimed thousands of lives and damaged hundreds of thousands of homes in southwestern Myanmar.

Larry Peppel, executive director of the Kosciusko County Chapter of the American Red Cross, said he has received phone calls this week from local residents wondering what they can do to assist in the relief efforts.

"The quickest, most important thing needed right now is money because it can be moved more quickly than supplies," Peppel said.

He said money will buy tents, food, clothing and medicine in the countries, which will help boost their economy.

They are in a search-and-recovery mode right now in China, and trying to provide for people who don't have homes. Many people are afraid to go back into their homes or apartments fearing another tremor may occur, Peppel said.

People wanting to donate funds to the China earthquake relief efforts should designate checks to AP 2060 China Relief and Development.

Funds donated to the International Response Fund for Myanmar and other international disaster relief efforts should he designated to American Red Cross International Response Fund.

After designating which fund a person wants to support, funds can be mailed to the American Red Cross of Kosciusko County, 320 N. Buffalo St., Warsaw IN 46580.

The Kosciusko Chapter of the American Red Cross will forward the funds to the National American Red Cross for the International Response Fund.

"At the American Red Cross, we work as hard as we can to honor the donor's intention of where they want the money to go," Peppel said.

The funds provide immediate relief and long-term support through supplies, technical assistance and other support.

People also can donate funds online at www.redcross.com

The American Red Cross is prepared to provide $10 million to support relief efforts following the earthquake in China, according to a press release Thursday by the American Red Cross national headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The $10 million will go toward the preliminary appeal by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, calling for $19.3 million to be raised.

The release states the American Red Cross will continue to weigh additional support options, which may include additional financial support, relief supplies or expertise.
