How to break the news, I want to take 3 weeks vacation?

We haven’t gone back for Chinese new year for 10 years since we came to US. I have not gone back to china for 4 years.
I just started a new job in August, but we plan to go back to china for the Chinese new year.
I only have 2 weeks vacation for first year. I want to take unpaid leave for this period.


When shall I notice, 2 months or 1 month earlier?

How to break the plan?

One of the boss just went back to India for 3 weeks. Hope he would understand this, 3 week is not long.
