I both buy options and write too. However I buy more than write. The only problem for writing option is that one needs to have large amount of cash which is ready for exercise. It seems like a passive style to earn money without leverage. For example, you wrote 20 contracts of SNP, which theoretically means you need to have 20*100*150 = 300k cash or equivalent. How do you handle this? You have a million dollar account?
