APSector Snap: Chinese and Hong Kong ADRsMonday August 27, 1:20 pm ET By Shaila Dani, AP Business News
U.S. Shares of Chinese and Hong Kong-Based Companies Surge on Overseas Market Strength NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of China- and Hong Kong-based companies traded on American exchanges jumped Monday, as the stocks reacted to yet another record trading session in their home countries. "Even with valuations getting lofty, people want a piece of China," said Morningstar equity analyst Michael Cumming. China's booming economy has led to dramatic gains for the Chinese market in recent years. The Bank of New York China ADR Index, which tracks a selection of Chinese- and Hong Kong- based stocks, rose 20.14 points, or 4.5 percent, to 465.01 in early afternoon trading. The index is up 29 percent year-to-date. The Shanghai Composite Index, which excludes most outside investment, rose to another record close of 5,150.12 overnight. The index hit record closes every day last week. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index added 2.9 percent, also hitting a new record close of 23,577.73. "Anytime Hong Kong does well, the ADRs are going to do well," Cumming said. The analyst said Asian stocks sold off very heavily during a period of broader market volatility related to fears of a U.S. slowdown, and said the stocks could be recovering from that hit. Shares of Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Co. rose $6.21, or 9.3 percent, to $72.71 after the company impressed investors with a robust fiscal first-half of 2007 financial report. Cumming said low oil prices benefited the company because the fuel prices it charges are fixed by the government. Shares of other Chinese and Hong Kong stocks also rose. Aluminum Corp. of China Ltd. surged $10.53, or 19.5 percent, to $64.55 as its U.S.-listed shares followed a 38 percent rise on the Hong Kong exchange overnight. PetroChina Co. shares added $4.04, or 2.8 percent, to $148.67. CNOOC Ltd., another oil company, saw its shares rise $4.89, or 4.1 percent, to $122.56. Shares of communications company China Telecom Corp. rose $1.58, or 2.8 percent, to $58.13. China Life Insurance Co. jumped $7.53, or 11.21 percent, to $74.68, and China Southern Airlines Co. added $4.27, or 8.6 percent, to $53.77.
