Penalties:

For offense:
False start: Players except QB in the offensive unit can’t move once ball is set. Any body motion before ball is snapped will be drawn a flag from officials. It is a 5 yard penalty.

Holding: Offensive team players can push and block the defense but they CAN NOT hold their bodies and grad their uniform to stop their movement. It is a 10 yard penalty.

Offensive passing interference (PI): Receivers can’t push CB/LB away in order to catch the ball. They are supposed not to have any contact before receivers touch the ball from the air anyway. It is a 10 yard penalty.

Tripping, or Chop Block: A offensive lineman blocks down low with his shoulders and arms, attempting to take the defender’s legs from underneath him and stop his momentum. If this play occurs three yards or more beyond the LOS, the blocker is penalized 15 yards.

Intentional Grounding: A penalty against QB. A QB can’t throw the ball to the ground in order to avoid the sack within TE box. A TE box is the area between two TE’s before the ball is snapped. If the QB gets out the area he can throw the ball back to line of scrimmage and not getting the penalty. It is a 15 yard penalty and losing a down.

Illegible Receiver: Mostly in the case of running screen play, when QB doesn’t throw the ball to his primary receiver, RB or WR, but the linemen. It is penalized 10 yards.

Illegal formation: It is a penalty that I still have problem to understand. To my knowledge there are 7 players (5 linemen plus 2 WR or 1 TE and 1 WR) line up at the LOS (line of scrimmage) before ball is snapped. When a TE moves back one step and he forgets to signal the WR to move up one step, the referee will call it a penalty. It is good for 5 yards. I hope that someone would come up better explanation than mine.

For Defense:
Offside, or encroachment: Defensive players jump across LOS before ball is snapped. It is a 5 yard penalty.

Defensive Holding: Defensive players are allowed to bump/push the offensive players within 5 yards from LOS. Beyond 5 yards, defensive players can not have any contact with the offensive players. It is a 5 yard penalty and the offensive side will get first down automatically regardless of yardage of previous down.

Defensive passing interference: Defensive players have body contacts with the offensive players to prevent them from catching the ball from air before the victim offensive player(s) touch the ball. In NACC, it is 10 yard penalty. In NFL, the ball is put on the spot where foul is committed.

Facemask: Defensive players grab the mask of victim offensive player to prevent him from gaining more yardages. It is a 5 yard or 15 yard penalty depending on the severity of the foul. The rule is used to protect a player from breaking his neck.

Roughing the passer: Defensive player have body contact with QB after QB releases ball from his hand. It is a 15 yard penalty. The rule is used to protect QB after QB kept getting injury by intentional tackles after plays were over during 80s-90s.

Special Team:
Illegal block from behind: Kickoff or punt return team players can’t push opponent team players from behind in order to open up a path for their KR/PR to run. It is a 10 yard penalty from the spot of foul.

Roughing the punter: Punt return team players can’t have any contact with the punter once he has punt the ball away. It is a 5 yard or 15 yard penalty depending on the severity of the foul.

Fair catch interference: If a PR wants to catch the ball only and doesn’t want to run after catch. He can wave his hand to the air to signal Fair Catch. The opponent team player can’t touch once he signals Fair Catch or they will receive 15 yard penalty.

General Penalties:
Personal Foul, or un-sportsmanship conduct: all extreme/excessive actions after play called dead due to frustration such as melee. It is a 15 yard penalty.

Taunting: Player can’t use any kind of language to insult his opponent. It is a 15 yard penalty.
Delay of game: the offense has 40 seconds to snap the ball between downs. If they can’t snap the ball when the countdown clock runs to zero, they will be penalized 5 yards.

Terminology:
Touch back: when the ball is kicked or punted into end zone. The offense starts the ball in their 20 yard line.

Hurdle: Before the ball is set, the offensive players will form a circle to surround their QB, in which the QB will receive orders from his coach(es) through the headphone in his helmet.

Snap: to move the ball to the hand of QB or ball holder. The ball snapper is the center of OL.

Snap Count: When playing in hostile stadiums, the home crowd will generate as much noise as possible to interfere with the communication of the offensive unit (to cause false start). To avoid the penalty, the offensive unit will use a tactic called snap count to counter the crowd’s noise. For example, the QB will tell his teammates to run Chicken play and he will snap the ball in 5 counts when he is in the huddle. Obviously, a mis-count will lead to false start penalty but a smart QB will use hard count to cause the defense jump offside. We will often hear the QB yelling “hut, hut, hut” during the games.

It is enough for today. I might write down some basic formations/game plans later on if your guys are interested in.
