NFL-Defense and Special Team:

Defense:
A basic defensive formation includes: DL, LB, secondary units (CB and S)

Normally, a DL (defensive line) includes 4 players. From left to right, it has LDE (left defensive end), LT (left tackle), RT (right tackle), and RDE (right defensive end). Both DE’s are supposed to rush pass opponent team’s OT (offensive tackles) and harass the QB. Therefore, they are relatively fast among the big guys. Both DT (defensive tackles) guard the middle. Their jobs are to stop all traffics in the middle so they are huge and relatively immobile. Some teams including Buffalo Bills in early 90’s or Pitt*****urg Steelers like to run 3-4 formation, which has 3 DL (defensive line men) and 4 LB’s, but most of NFL team have 4-3 formation.

LB (linebacker) corps includes SLB (strongside linebacker), MLB (middle linebacker), WLB (weakside linebacker). WLB is the fastest among these 3 and usually the one who blitz the QB. The main duties are to watch opponent team’s TE(s) and RB.

CB (corner back) includes LCB (left Corner back) and RCB (right corner back). Their job is to take care of opponent team’s WRs. When facing 3-WR set, defensive coordinator will insert a third corner and his position is called slot CB.

S (safety) includes SS (strong safety) and FS (free safety). Normally SS stuffs the run and FS is a ball hawk. Both of them watch the field in the middle.

Special team:

Special team includes kicker, punter, and coverage teams. There is a position called Gunner in punt coverage team. He is the man who is first down the field and is often double-teamed by the punt return unit.

PR (punt returner) is the guy who returns the punt.

KR (kick returner) is the guy who returns the kickoff.
