I am a die-hard football fan. I am glad that more and more Chinese from China are showing interest in football today. I am here to write down what I know (about pro football) to help the novices to enjoy NFL games every weekend. Those are basic knowledge of football. I welcome all inputs and comments if I miss something and make mistakes.
NFL (national football league) includes two conferences, AFC (American football conference) and NFC (National football conference), respectively. These two conferences played separately before they decided to combine to play the first Super bowl in 1967. Now each team has chance to play against teams from different conference but the scores against same conference teams count first in the final record.
Regular football season takes 17 week long. Each team plays 16 games and has 1 bye week in-between. Final record of #1 and #2 seeds/teams of each conference are awarded a bye week during playoff. #3 vs. #6 and #4 vs. #5 seeds play against each other during the 1st playoff week. It is one death match game and higher number of seeds has home field advantage. The winners of these games travel to #1 and #2 seed’s cities to play the second round of playoff. The winners of 2nd round play against each other for the title of Conference championship. The Super bowl finalists are the Champions from two conferences.
Each team is allowed to carry maximum 53 men into the season. It has 4 preseason games/weeks to determine the final roster. The coaching staffs include coaches for each position. A team includes offensive unit, defensive unit, and special team. A team puts 11 players on the field regardless of its gaming status. An extra player will induce a penalty called 12 men on the field and will be penalized 5 yard.
Each team has 4 downs (chances) to move the ball forward 10 yards. Fail to do so will turn the ball over. If succeed it is called first down. In NCAA, the clock stops if offense gets first down. In NFL, the clock continues to run unless the ball carrier runs out of bound within 5 minute from half/end of the game.
Scores: A TD (touchdown) counts six points and is awarded an extra kick from 25 yards out. If score it counts one point. A field goal counts three points.
