400D does not have spot metering.

For photographing the moon, you do not need spot metering because the moon is not going anywhere. It may be too late for photographing the lunar eclipse, but in the future, put the camera in manual mode, stop the aperture down by 1 stop or so from its maximum value for better image quality, and change the shutter speed until you get the correct exposure.
