Neither lens is fast for indoor photography.

You can do it, but not as good as a fast lens like 50mm f/1.8, which brings up another problem: d40 cannot use this excellent yet inexpensive lens.

So I would recommend:

1. D80 + 50mm f/1.8 (for indoor photography) + 18-200mm VR (or Tamron 18-200mm or Tamron 18-250mm or Sigma 18-200mm OS which is supposed to be available next month)

or

2. Canon XTi + 50mm f/1.8 + (Tamron 18-200mm or Tamron 18-250mm or Sigma 18-200mm OS which is supposed to be available next month). Package 2 is cheaper than package 1.
