1. GPS must have pre-loaded trail information and not all such information is accurate if you venture away from well-established and well marked trails;
-> You do not need trail info. A few way points will get you back if you are lost. And accurate longitude and latitude value will aid search parties greatly.
2. Mountain trails are normally outside the coverage of cell phone networks;
-> One of the 3 guys who died in Oregon made cell phone calls. If he could also tell the people his longitude and latitude, people will not need to search for him.
3. Walkie-talkies are heavy and run out of battery very fast.
-> It is just as heavy as cell phone a few years ago, and nothing compared with a small lens. Battery should last at least a day, and you can turn it off when not using it.
