Well, what separates a Ph.D. from a Master degreee holder?

By definition a Ph.D. holder is supposed to be capable of carrying out INDEPENDENT research. One manager told me that the way he motivates a Ph.D. is to starve him in a cage for a month; then let him out to do his research. A hungry Ph.D. is always more productive than a fed-well one. End of discussion.

According to the same manager, certain degree of unemployment (including the Ph.D. sector) in US will enhance the productivity and efficiency of the working force across the board and benefit industries of the whole nation. It's similar, in a sense, to what Social Darwinism is harping on: survival of the fittest. Based on the number of new Ph.D. generated each year, nowadays a Ph.D. holder is simply another senor working ant or another pair of helping hands. No more, no less.

Luckily there are many ways out of the research mode for a Ph.D. scientist if he is tired of running experiments. It all depends on what you want for life and work. If you are not cut out for a top-notch scientist, you might consider other career options that are available to those prepared minds. No matter what your decision is, giving yourself an accurate self-assessment is very important. You should know what you can and can't do. You should know what inspires you day in and day out. You should have confidence in whatever you are doing. Otherwise, you do not deserve the Ph.D. title. Welcome to the real world which offers both opportunities and traps on a first come first served basis.
