Look at the positive side

I can imagine that doing so-called R&D work in China would make one lazy and passive, and drain any creativity, energy and interest one might have had about anything.

First thing you need to change is this pessimistic attitude if you want to be sucecssful at anything in the US. I wouldn't be suprised if nothing comes up if all you did was sitting at home and emailing resumes. You would most likely fail even if you do get an interview.

You #1 prioirty is to step outside of home, get in touch with the society here. Go work at a restaurant, go do vulenteer work in the local communities, go meet various people in student organizations and churches, attend events and acitivities the school offers. When you are at home, go check out how EBay works and whether you might have some ideas about doing business there, look at the stock market and see how you can gain some knowledge about it.

Keep yourself busy and make yourself useful. Don't try to hide behind what you are used to and comfortable with. You made the decision to come to the US then at least try to embrace what you have. nobody's gonna hand you anything here but at the same time, only sky is the limit.
