Long shots lead to long rebounder, and fast breaks. Inside the paint, FG% is higher, more chance for offensive rebounds, put more pressure on defense to potential foul trouble. It's a given, if you can play inside.
MJ is a better defender, and his awareness of the happening on court is superb. He is a 50% career shooter, and takes far less 3 pointers than Kobe and TMac. That being said, although MJ didn't have one of the best center along side, he certainly had one the best, if not THE best SF in Pippen with him in all those 6 championship years. He also had defensive specialist in Rodman.
People who show so much love for pure offense, probably never really watch any past great teams. All the championship teams are defensive oriented teams, including the all mighty 72 wins Bulls. They always won in the 90s, and they had 3 prime defender in starting lineup. Without a complete package of defense and offense, and a healthy balance of that, no team will have a chance to play for the championships.
It doesn't matter what era you are in. I always hesitate to compare present players with past greats, before they are even close to the success. So I don't want to compare a Yao in first round playoff with guys like Hakeem or Akeem. I don't want to compare a Dirk with Bird, or a LeBron with MJ. Kobe, on the other hand, he had 3 rings as the second fiddle, obviously contributed more than Horry's 6 rings, but he's not in a position, to really be compared with Jordon.
Inside-out is the best controllable game to play.
