I will give one simple advice (which I used myself). It is useful in the digital age because you will incur zero cost for taking additional photos.

Set camera to Av mode, set aperture to maximum in low light situations. Take a few pictures. If it is too dark (like these two), set EV to "+" side, and take a few more pictures. If still too dark, set EV to even more "+".
