Noise is the most important area to improve.

Unfortunately, this is not an easy task.

Canon 400D does increase resolution from 350D's 8MP to 10 MP without increasing noise per pixel at <= ISO 400 (so achieving a noise reduction per area). But from 800-1600, the per pixel noise does increase.

The Sony A100 included image stabilizationn in the camera body. But its noise level is a lot worse compared with both Canon and Nikon, so even image stabilization with increased noise cancelled each other out, that is, with Canon or Nikon, you can achieve stable image by simply shooting at higher ISO (thus faster shutter speed), without introducing more noise.
