How to use Photoshop to bring up more detail in the dark area?

Hi, This should not be a hard job for those who are good at PS. Could you please give me some good idea? I tried to use lasso tool with a feather of x pixels, select the dard area, then adjust's its own brightness/contract, it doesn't really work, because it causes problems on the edges of the selection, i.e., the transition at the edges becomes too obvious. I don't think I am using the right method. I would like to bring up more details in the front dark areas so that the picture will have more "depth". The image is scanned, not from DC. Thanks.
