Sigma in general has good optics but has autofocusing problem in some lenses. Tamron on the other hand has no autofocusing problems but optics is supposed (according to reviews, plus my single lens experience) poorer than Sigma.

So if the two companies merge into one, then, Canon users can expect much better third party lenses.
