should ask for higher
There is no way they could find out your true compensation. Because it is a private issue and no people except your current boss and IRS knows your salary. Background and reference check wouldn't be able to indentify it also. However, you may want to tell your new boss your true salary but ask for at least $60K. If you are attractive to them, they may offer you between $55K to $60K. Otherwise, they don't understand why you are willing to accept their offer. In return, if you don't ask for higher compensation, they will doubt your qualification and they view you are lack of confidence. Good luck to you.
