people want a mid size family sedan, so do not talk about corolla. Camry and malibu are both great mid size car. buyer have the choice to go with a I4 or V6 car, they do not have to choose a V6 camry.
for average consumer, they want a reliable mid size car, both of these two fit the critiria, number of cylinders may not be that important for them. camry offers I4 while malibu does not, too bad for GM.
