Minor correction... It is stand up for oneself, not stand out

I think you meant to teach him to stand up for himself, instead of "stand out on himself".  

Instead of reaching out to his teacher, ask your child for suggestions on potential playmates, then reach out to their parents for the possibility of play dates.  Since you are the one initiated the conversation with his teacher, kindly accept the teacher's input as a guide. Not everything can be resolved by contacting the principal.
