Dear COM faculty, staff, residents and students:
In partnership with the State Department of Health, Xxxx is closely monitoring the international developments relating to the COVID-19 virus, in addition to the widespread occurrence of influenza and other respiratory viruses. There are currently NO patients with COVID-19 in The State. However, Xxxx is taking proactive, precautionary steps to ensure there are no compromises in patient care or the safety of our employees or learners.
I want to emphasize the importance of preventing potential exposure of any COM learner – including students, residents and fellows – in the eventuality of having patients with COVID-19 at Xxxx at some point in the future. It is imperative that no learner is involved in the care of such patients in any manner. Particularly, learners should not be present in the rooms of patients diagnosed with or suspected of potentially having COVID-19.
In addition to safeguarding our learners, this separation is important for the conservation of personal protective equipment (PPE). If you are a member of the medical staff, or you are a clinical learner, we ask that you redouble your efforts to avoid wasting PPE. (See the tips at end of this message.) Even in the absence of COVID-19 on campus at this time, clinical education teams should consider limiting the number of team members who gown up to enter patient rooms, as practicable.
The planning and measures we take today are a prudent way to be prepared in the event of a more widespread outbreak in the future.
Meanwhile, we should all remain vigilant to prevent the spread of “ordinary” but potentially dangerous respiratory viruses including the flu. Follow these simple steps: Wash your hands often; make sure you and your loved ones have had your flu shot – or get it; and if you become sick, stay at home and contact your physician.
Sincerely,
xxxxxxxxxxxxx M.D., FACS
