While some vitamins, such as Vitamin C, may not harm heart health, they can still be taken if desired to support other aspects of your health. However, it's also important to be aware of supplements such as Vitamin E that can actually increase the risk of heart failure and stroke. (The jury is still out on Vitamin D, though Dr. Cho says only those with very low levels should even consider supplementation.)
In addition, a number of products available over the counter that are touted for their “cholesterol-lowering” ability can cause serious liver damage. Other types of supplements such as those made with animal thyroid may interact with cardiac medicines, causing unwanted effects such as rapid heartbeat, increased blood pressure or increased bleeding.
