我对摄影的最早的记忆,是来自于父亲。当年他拿着一个怪异的大匣子，追着我在合肥逍遥津，南京中山陵和上海外滩玩耍。他用那个匣子盯着我，匣子上写着"海鸥"。1985年，当我来到纽约的JFK机场，父亲背着一个叫做"佳能"的小匣子来接我。在随后的几年中，父亲在康奈尔大学做研究，难得的空隙，他总是挂着那个小匣子带着全家郊游。我寻思着，自己今后绝不会碰这些小匣子，因为我的理想是成为一个NHL球员或一名F1赛车手。

我大学里学的是数字信号处理。虽然花过无数时间用图像处理算法来制作花花公子女郎伦纳的图片（这是标准测试图像的图像处理算法），居然仍没动过自己拍照片的念头。2002年新西兰之旅，我不玩相机的念头开始动摇 -- Milford海峡，Franz Josef 冰川美景和异国的风情让我如痴如醉。不过，我仍然想成为赛车手。最终，在2008年，为中国之行我不得不买了个尼康D80数码单反相机。从那以后，在运气，瞬间，快感和兴奋中，我开始追逐我的梦。

在U2的"Still haven't found I'm Looking For"喃喃的音乐中，我注视着墙上Adams的作品＂沙丘，日升，加州死亡山谷国家纪念碑＂。我的视觉和情感开始在时空的碎片里流连，伴随着Ewritt; McCurry; Franks and Smith，还有那童年记忆中怪异的大匣子，"海鸥"...

 

第一次看到 Jim 的照片，是从 C80 的虾想里看到的那些精彩照片。 给我印象最深的，是一张走廊里游动的人们。普普通通的场景，空间感、时间感被 Jim 抓得恰到好处，照片拍得意味深长。 后来又看到一张长途地铁火车上旅客的照片。也是同样的令人深为感触。这些是都是我司空见惯的场景， Jim 拍出的是我极其想拍而又办不到的那种照片。我由此断定，他一定是一位睿智的长者、老烧。

见到真人，才知道他是小留学生出身，也才知道他是平时做事严密的工程师。 但是，看 Jim 的照片， 你很容易被他心中澎湃的激情感染。

Jim 能够在瞬间即逝的忙乱中，有条不紊地理清头绪， 一次次找出心中在世界里 的美妙印记。我觉得这完全不是旁人(比如我）能够轻易做到的。各种元素，在 我熟视无睹时，被 Jim 招之即来，挥之即去。这不仅是决定性的瞬间，更是一贯 胸有成竹的投影。这是天赋， 也是智识。

照相为什么，拍什么，是每个人都面临的问题。可以是记录美丽的大千世界，可 以是抒发内心情感。 从 Jim 的作品里， 既能看到 Elliot Erwit, André Kertész, Eugene Smith 的影子，也能看到风光大师的苗头，更能看到赛车手心 中的澎湃、对风暴来临的赞颂。但是我们大多数人不可能像摄影记者、广告 影师那样，有无限多的时间成天拍各种有趣的照片，迟早要面临一个命题、 选择的难关。 Jim 不满足于光影、瞬间的诱惑，而是深思熟虑，步 步为营地挑战自己。死亡、葬礼开始出现在他的作品中。 爱国主义、强词夺理， 似乎也已经在他的计划之中。还有那充满象征意义的美国旗、中国旗，也已在 他的谋算之中。这不是一般的胆识 -- 我知道的其他一切影师，似乎都已把 "国旗"这一题材拱手让给在《美国人》里将此运用得登峰造极的 Robert Frank。

知道 Jim 今年晚些时候有一个像暴风骤雨一样激动人心的摄影计划。我不禁按捺 不住，期待早日看到他的新作品。
