All depend on what you agreed to.

I believe your case is not a sublease. It's just that you agree to lease to the end of the old lease between the current tenant and the landlord. The agreement is between you and the landlord. You pay rent and deposit to the landlord. How the deposit of the current tenant should be returned is not your concern.
