I have known XX for nine years – an entire half of my life. We first met in elementary school, in the English as Second Language Learners class, actually, since we had both recently emigrated from China. Our understanding of each other goes deeper than being from the same country, and our friendship continued even after we had both overcome the language barrier. I have shared a variety of memorable experiences with her: I have been on ski trips with her family; I have lived with her family for three months due to my parent’s emergency absence; I have even come to like her obnoxious dog. We have attended the same elementary, junior high, and high school, and therefore, I know XX both as a friend and as a student.

Statement thingy…

It is my pleasure to recommend XX for admission to Dartmouth College. Being her elementary, junior high, and high school friend, I speak from the personal experiences I have had with XX.

First and foremost, XX is a very persuasive person. This, combined with her genuine interest in making the community around her a better place, would make a positive addition to any college. I remember when I was in eighth grade and she was in seventh grade, when she first introduced me to volunteering at the local library. She had, at that time, been volunteering for some time, and wanted to encourage and introduce others to an activity she deemed worthwhile. I was fairly unconvinced at first, being the thirteen-year-old that I was, and interested primarily in computer games, T.V., and the like. XX, however, soon countered all my arguments and informed me of what she thought our role should be in our community. Of course I scoffed at her, but she changed my opinion with her enthusiasm. She was extraordinarily patient with the small children we worked with, which I admittedly wasn’t too thrilled about. When everyone around her were preoccupied with the clothes they were wearing, or the latest CDs or games they would be receive at Christmas, or possessed by the belief that it simply wasn’t worth their time to try and change anything, because, let’s face it, preteens were fixated on themselves most of the time, what XX believed and the actions that arose from those beliefs were remarkable.

She has volunteered continuously since then, despite a demanding school workload and sports obligations, and please believe me when I say that juggling all she had was not easy, because I was in her shoes just last year. She, instead of only helping out, even organized events for the kids in our community, such as Origami Day or Magic Day, and has since persuaded many people to become volunteers. Such devotion to a cause is admirable.

Academically, XX has always been a prodigious reader and a proactive learner, as I’m sure her record reflects. She is skilled at using the knowledge she has learns outside of the classroom, and is on XX’s award winning Academic Decathlon team. She has high standards for herself and does not make excuses for herself. I don’t have much to add that you will not glean from her achievements, except to say that I’m confident that she is capable of the rigors of the Dartmouth curriculum, and would surely make uses of all the resources that Dartmouth has to offer, challenge herself, and inspire others around her to the same.

I have no reservations in recommending XX to the admission officers at Dartmouth College.
